"STATEMENTS POSTED ON THIS WEBSITE RELATING TO APPRAISALS OR VALUATIONS OF POTTERY,WHETHER SPECIFIC OR GENERAL,SHOULD NOT BE RELIED UPON FOR ANY PURPOSE AS VALUATION ADVISE.COLLECTORS WHO WISH TO OBTAIN A VALUATION OF A SPECIFIC ITEM OF POTTERY ARE ENCOURAGED TO CONSULT AN INDEPENDENT APPRAISER"
We did not build this site to value other peoples pottery or to value any We or any of Our Friends own.We intended to help People to identify what They have and to enjoy Others pottery. That being said I will try to explain My theory and theories of some Friends as to What Us as Collectors value. These are strictly My thoughts and We assume no responsibity for what Anyone pays or asks for Sand Mountain Pottery or any other pottery!

Sand Mountain Pottery and all other Alabama pottery has increased in price over the past few Years. The good pottery is highly sought after and is becoming much harder to find.We as collectors want the rarer pieces,decorated,signed,double-dipped and pieces with great glazes. You can see all the examples of what I have just talked about on these pages. You have to take into account How rare a piece is to determine value. You are going to see more pitchers or churns than homebrew crocks,so You can expect to pay more or get more for a homebrew crock than a pitcher or churn. Some people prefer churns and some prefer pitchers and some like other pieces.
Collectors love pieces that have combing. The more decoration the more the piece is sought after thus increasing the value.Signed pieces are also more valuable than unsigned pieces.I have seen very few pieces that were decorated and signed.
Glazes are also very important to Collectors.Ash and lime glazes are the glazes that Collectors want. These pieces are earlier than albany slip glazes and are more valuable.Doubled-dipped pieces are also more valuable than a regular ash or lime glaze.Runny glazes are in My opinion much better than some mat glazed pieces.
When buying Pottery You should deal with reputible Dealer or with Someone You know. There are People who repair pottery and You should always ask and examine pieces carefully.I have seen People ask way too much for their pottery.Just because a double-dipped homebrew crock brings a price doesn't mean a plain glazed or albany slipped glazed churn is worth that much.
All of what I have just said is only My opinion and should not be used to make choices when You collect.Buy what appeals to You.I have yet to meet a collector Who will not share knowledge with You.So don't be afraid to seek These People out. This is the best way to learn about pottery.Danny
